The
Gift
Bizzy Bone |
After BTNHResurection
was released I thought all of the problems with Bone were over
and things were going to get back to normal. See, Bone is my favorite
rap group/artists out there and I was very distraught with the rumors
of a breakup. Bone's fourth album BTNHResurecction had every
other song mentioning that they had 'never broken up'. So I figured
that would be the end of things and every one would live happily
ever after. Apparently that was then and now things have changed...
"See there's
a lot of questions that need answering / They want to know what's
up with bizzy and bone thugs [did yall break up? / uh uh] all this
and all that / I'm gonna simplified that shit"
"Two of the bones
dissed me / I don't give a fuck / we got history / shit it aint
no mystery / niggaz is pissed off saying I anit showing up to shows
/ but the people don't know / I aint making no money / so what I
am I working for"
"I am the one
that made it work / You can kiss my ass / hear me laugh"
So apparently Bone is
again on the outs (even though Lazy Bone said on his recent album
that there is no problems). There is no denying the lawsuit that
Bizzy has brought against Bone's label Ruthless over the promotion
of his second solo album or lack there of.
"Instead, Loud,
as well as Epic Music Video, elected to release and promote The
Collection: Volume Two, a movie about the platinum-selling rap
group released to coincide with a greatest hits package of the
same name. In the film, Bizzy alleges he is portrayed "untruthfully
as a user and endorser of illegal drugs."
The suit reads,
in part, "As a direct and proximate result of defendants'
breaches, Bizzy has suffered and will continue to suffer damage
including, but not limited to: The damage to Bizzy's solo career
which results from defendants' failure to manufacture, promote,
and distribute [Bizzy's second solo album]; and the related damage
to Bizzy's career which results from defendants' election to release
The Collection: Volume Two instead of [Bizzy's second solo album],
namely the creation and fostering of a public perception that
Bizzy no longer creates new, current music. Defendants' wrongful
conduct creates the incorrect impression that Bizzy has been relegated
to the status of a greatest hits musician and is not currently
active.
Bizzy is suing for
breach of contract, violation of right of publicity, false designation
of origin, unfair competition, interference with prospective economic
advantage, conspiracy, demand for accounting, constructive trust,
and permanent injunction. In addition to Loud and Sony Music Entertainment,
Bizzy also names Compton Records, Ruthless Records, Epic Music
Video, and Tomica Wright, president and C.E.O. of Ruthless Records,
as defendants in the suit."
(From
Allstar News by Kevin Raub)
What is truly hilarious
is the part about Bizzy complaining that he was mis-portrayed as
a user of Drugs. This is also the same artist that has the song
"Fried Day" on his second solo album. There has
to be something else going on here but regardless, Bizzy has broke
off from Ruthless to release his second solo album under AMC, The
Gift.
Well The Gift
is certainly not a top notch quality work on the production side
of things. I am assuming that as soon as he dropped Ruthless he
spent one day to record this album and had it in the stores the
next. The whole CD is full of second rate production levels and
some of the most basic beats ever created. One song "Never
Grow"
had to be Bizzy
and a Casio keyboard. I recognize all of the sound effects in the
song and all Bizzy did was hit the one or two keys. It is hilarious
to listen to a song and realize that you could almost recreate the
entire song, minus Bizzy, in the comfort of your own home. While
I am slamming on this song and the others, I will say that I am
inexplicably drawn back to this album. I am hooked on it, including
the Casio keyboard song which is one of my favorites.
This album for all it
second rate production values still has Bizzy on the mic and that
more than makes up for that to make this a very hot album. The beats
while being second rate are some of the best second rate beats out
there and Bizzy's rapping skills make up for any deficiencies. Bizzy
in his solo capacity is able to do things that the constraints of
the Bone group never allowed him to do. While his first album Heavenz
Movie was mostly just Bizzy just as he was with Bone, The
Gift has a lot more of Bizzy using some different styles and approaches.
We get a little hard core Bizzy, fast Bizzy, preaching Bizzy, fried
out Bizzy, dance/party song Bizzy, so many different styles makes
this album so deep. The album flows very well song to song and the
transitions between the styles are smooth enough that the constant
change is not a detractor.
This album has a lot
of very quality songs, while there may not be any true hit songs,
all of the tracks are high quality. While the beats are fairly reg.
the rest is all quality. You get some great verses from Bizzy raging
in topics from Jesus, drugs, to a dead on Eminem impersonation in
one song. This keeps me entertained from song to song and makes
the album quality top to bottom.
Favorite line[s]
"I was a daddy at
12 / Hell I love my children / always will"
- For Bizzy that is
saying something. I have heard that he has possibly double digits
kids, with at least 8 women.
"Now I'm tweaking
/ ecstacy'd out every weekend / well why don't you try some PCP?
/ but the weed was still decent / Aww, shit he's just about seasoned
/ my liver won't give it up / your blood stream is immune / ate
up an ounce of toxic mushrooms / here you need some orange juice
/ OJ! I hate him (you what?) but fuck that and pop you one of
these valiums"
"Big pussy
/ sugar dick come here sugar dick / nah this is sweet nuts right
here / I'm heading down I-71 / I just picked up a dirty bag of
weed / this shit is grass"
- Man, I can see why
Bizzy was pissed about that drug thing, I am sure he doesn't use
any illicid substances.
Favorite track
"Never Grow"
As strange as it seems the low quality beats seem to make
this song better. A close second is "Murderah"
This song is hard core Bizzy going at top speed, but things are
still comprehendible (as much as any BIzzy song that is). A couple
of the verses in this song sound eerily similar to Eminem. I get
hyped when I hear this song.
Total Tracks: 14
Skipped Tracks: 2
Recommend: Borrow
It
I have to say that I
like this album a lot, but I am not going to give it a Buy It
Recommendation, but it is awfully close. This is mainly because
I think that most people out there a) don't like Bone that much
and b) certainly don't like solo Bone efforts. Still, right now
it is one of my favorite albums, and it doesn't seem to be degrading
any. If you are a Bone fan or a Bizzy fan I would definitely recommend
picking this up. If your not a Bone fan, there are better albums
that you could get to get into Bone (i.e. E.
1999 Eternal). Still if you can borrow this album, give it a
test drive I think that you will be pleasantly surprised. A quality
effort.
