Ja Rule |
I think every one remembers
"Alven and the Chipmunks". It was a popular cartoon series
of a group of chipmunks that were turned into a group of singers,
but anyway. Way back in the day when I got a stereo complete with
a tape deck I found that you could record music faster then the
normal rate. So how do these two things relate, well what ever the
singers voice was when it was recording on the tape deck they would
sound like the characters from "Alven and the Chipmunks".
So How does this relate to Ja Rule new album Rule 3:36 you
ask?
Well one of the most
hilarious things that I have ever heard is on the latest's Ja Rule
work. He discovered, much like I did 10 years ago, that voices can
be speed up to make very strange voices. On the song "6
Feet Underground" you have this character (I don't know
who's voice it is, it could be Ja himself for all I know) using
the speed up someone voice that is singing the chorus as Ja lays
down his verse over top. This makes for one of the strangest combinations
with the high pitch voices in the background and Ja deep throated
lyrics that he has become to be know by. Strangely enough I find
myself fascinated and entertained by this mixture.
While "6 Feet
Underground" is a hilarious song it is one of a group of
utterly pointless songs that seem to be the staple of Ja Rule. Rapping
about nothing, and relying on his voice and inflection in his rapping
to sell his records. Well it worked for me cause I like his style
and I am willing to look past his obvious deficiencies in other
areas. The rest of the album and realistically "6 Feet Underground"
is a mediocre effort by Ja The songs all have no content, only snazzy
beats and Ja style.
I would continue to say
that one of the biggest problems with Ja Rules is his continued
use of and attempts to put Vita over. I want to state on the record
that I HATE Vita. I hate her rapping, hate her style, and I think
that is one of the biggest detractions to Ja efforts which all seem
to contain her work. Case in point the song "Fuck You (featuring
01 and Vita) is utterly ruined by Vita's efforts in the chorus If
you leave her out it might even be a tolerable song, needless to
say it's not.
The other problem with
Ja is the schizophrenic nature of Ja's raps. I think that the main
thing that he wants to put across is the hard core Ja of Murder
Inc. (the Ja I like the best) but he seems to want to branch out
into areas that he shouldn't be. Ja shouldn't be attempting to make
Reg & B (R&B) Songs like "I Cry" Featuring
Lil' Mo. It just doesn't fit with the impression that I get from
Ja, and that detracts from all of the songs. Needless to say this
album seems to contain much more of Ja attempting to tackle, styles
and topics that he just not equipped to handle.
Favorite line[s]
"Dice are rolling/the
knives are out/with
the present danger all around/I don't say they mean harm/but they
each get it on/to see us 6 feet underground"
- From "6 Feet
Underground" Just think about these lyrics, with someone
singing it with a chipmunks voice. (Make sure you roll your r's
when you sing it) It's great.
Favorite track
"6 Feet Underground"
I love this track for the reasons that I discussed above, but
I think this song has the best example of hard-core Ja that I
like the most. Ja even state's it in the song, "...I'm getto..."
so take his word for it.
Total Tracks: 16
Skipped Tracks: 9
Recommend: Borrow
It
I like this CD, I can
stand to listen to most of the songs on the Album, but it is definitely
a low quality effort by Ja Rule. Borrow it and see if you like it,
if for nothing else than to hear the song "6 Feet Underground"
