Restless

Ratings
1 to 10 Scale 1 is the worst, 10 the best

Restless is a surprisingly mundane effort from X to the Z. After having some truly memorable cameos as well as one hit song under his belt I was excited about the prospect of Restless. Also, when I saw it was produced by Dre I thought it was a 'can't miss effort'. However, I was unpleasantly surprised.

I am not saying the CD is trash. There are some really memorable efforts on here. "X", "Alkaholik", "Double Time", and "Don't Approach Me" are all worth a listen. That said, none of these songs are especially powerful. They are solid rap efforts that I like to listen to.

The big problem I have with Restless is that I become restless when listening to it. X manages to put together a painfully ordinary lineup of standard Xzibit jive. He's hard core, he's a heavy drinker, and that's about all. X falls flat on his ass on his attempt at meaningful expression: "I'm Sorry I'm Away so Much". This song sucks hard. I appreciate that X wants to send a message to his son on the disc, but you gotta go it a little better, man.

Something X will always be fighting is that he is the jack of all trades, master of none. He is somewhat funny, somewhat hard core, somewhat drug related, somewhat violent, and has a somewhat interesting style. This combination causes the CD to lose a lot of its power.

After listening to it all the way through there are few memorable moments. There are some good tracks, but none that I wanted to listen to again and again. I hate to come off like I'm busting his chops because I really love what he does. When he's doing it well. This album just doesn't do it for me though. I can sum it up in one word: unremarkable.

Side Rant:

Eminem's I hate my fans schtick is really growing tiresome. On "Don't Approach Me" X and Eminem go through another essay on why Em and apparently X as well are annoyed by their fans. While what they're saying has some valdiity Eminem really has addressed this issue already with potent force on Marshall Mathers.

After awhile, this gets lame. I know that if I see Eminem I am not saying a fucking word. Eminem basically hauls all his fans out on the carpet for being his fans. This just in: that fucking money doesn't drop from the sky. If you want to be rich you have to put up with the people who pay your bills.

I'm not justifying all of the stupid shit people do to the guy. What I am saying is that Eminem should cool it a little bit. About one more song with this as a subject will be too many. A backlash is inevitable, and Em should look at what people can do to you if you fall out of favor. **cough Vanilla Ice cough cough*** I bet Ice would sign a few autographs to be in Eminem's place. Anyway, I like Eminem's music, but he should get off it.

Favorite line[s]

"Tonight, I meet might my next ex-wife."

- This is a high quality funny line. There's not too much more to say than that

"I can drink a whole Hennessey 5th, some call it a problem, I call it a gift."

-This is a nice line. X really plays on his love of alcoholic beverages throughout the cd, and this line sums it up nicely

Favorite track

"X" While it seems like a cop out to call his hit the best song, it's simply true. While the letter X is really being put through the motions nowadays between DMX and Xzibit, he does a good job with "X". The song is a nice introduction to people who have never listened to or heard of Xzibit. The chorus is a relentless pumping X with Xzibit summing up his game. It's just a nice rap track - flat out. Honorable Mentions: "Double Time", "Alkaholik", "Don't Approach Me".

Total Tracks: 16

Skipped Tracks: 6

Recommend: Skip It

I would like to say that if you're a fan of X go out and buy it, but I can't. I consider myself an X fan, and I'm not feeling what he's doing. X needs to explore himself a little more and come up with something a little more powerful, personal, and intelligent. (sorry, X)
