I started working at MSU in 1964 at the MSU Bookstore in the International Center. CT's started trying to organize a few years later. The U tried all kinds of things to keep this from happening.
My supervisor used crafty little things to get rid of people he
heard were involved. He would go down an aisle a particular person
was in. He would knock books off of the shelf, and if that person
didn't pick them up immediately, they were fired on the spot.
Another trick was to promote almost everyone to a
"supervisor." Of course, this was in name only.
Fear was rampant. My personal belief is that if we didn't have
the union, then management would be just as inhumane and
heartless as they were back then. Respect is definitely less
important to them than money. I've seen it—I've been there.
