Willie Paulsen, Chair

Health & Safety announces new chair
Committee
accepting new members

Willie Paulsen has stepped down as chair of IEC in order to chair the Health and Safety Committee.

Health and Safety is a high profile CTU committee that has been given the contractual responsibility for representing the Union in meetings with MSU administrators and health and safety personnel.

Colleen Drake, who did an exemplary job of leading Health and Safety for many years, will now co-chair the Issues and Education Committee with Walt Peebles.

"Advocating for workplace health and safety is one of the most important jobs of a union," Paulsen said, "and I plan to be as committed to this task as Colleen has been."

Paulsen encouraged anyone with a concern or question about a workplace safety situation to contact her. Health and Safety will get official answers to members' questions as well as bring our concerns to those officially charged with ensuring our safety. Even if a department responds positively to a CT’s complaint and fixes a problem, the committee wants a report so that it can monitor issues that arise on campus.

Health and Safety will continue to educate members on a wide array of health and safety issues, said Paulsen, adding that she sees her new position as giving her an opportunity to discuss the many ramifications of political decisions on our health and safety.

"Just look at the current federal administration’s decision to scrap the ergonomics standards that took 10 years to develop," she said. "That shows how political decisions can have a huge impact on our health and our ability to do our jobs."

Health and Safety members are planning activities for the coming year. Attendance fell off somewhat during the summer, and the committee is now looking for new members. Please consider serving on this important CTU committee.

The Joint Health and Safety Committee
As our Contract provides, the CTU’s Health and Safety Committee meets regularly with representatives from DPPS, the Office of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Safety, the University Engineer and Employee Relations for the purpose of having continuing dialogue on safety issues.

The Health and Safety Committee’s
Safety Awareness Campaign

crosswalk cropped 75.jpgThe Health and Safety Committee is continuing its campaign to inform MSU drivers about the correct way to approach pedestrian crosswalks. Angled white lines running between two parallel white lines of a crosswalk indicate that the pedestrian has the right of way! If a pedestrian has a toe in such a crosswalk, State law dictates that the vehicle must stop and yield the right of way to the pedestrian. However, this law does not apply to crosswalks that are painted with two parallel white lines only.
