The Feminist Construction
of Gender as displayed through the "Womyn-Born Womyn Only" Policy
at Michigan Womyn's Music
Festival
an essay by Carrie Elizabeth Victoria
Copeland
For twenty-five years,
Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival (MWMF) has provided a space for womyn to
come together for one week each summer to celebrate their womynhood and
learn from each other while collectively maintaining a womyn-only community.
This description of the festival sounds amazing. What could be wrong
with a festival of that nature? When we examine the policies surrounding
what "womyn" means to the MWMF organizers, we can truly come to understand
the ways in which feminists are attempting to construct gender while utilizing,
at times, their power and privilege to define and enforce gender.
The feminist construction of gender that is based on the oppressed becoming
the oppressors works counter to many of the goals of feminist theory and
activism.
