Review Questions for Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate)

I. Examine how food is used as central metaphor in the film and as a system of narration and communication. How does the film use food to represent cultural practices? How do race, gender, nationality,  and class intersect around food?

II. How does the film make use of the conventions of magical realism?  Choose appropriate examples from the film and analyze how they reflect the complex interaction of ethnic cultures and histories.

III. Examine the exploration of boundaries and borders in the film. Some of these might include political, ethnolinguistic, temporal, spacial, gender, and racial boundaries. How are those boundaries delimited, crossed, erased in the film? You should read the review notes about Laura Esquivel novel (in the class web page). Are these views applicable to the film?
