Michigan Minimum Wage Increases.

On March 28, 2006, Governor Granholm signed into law a bill that will increase Michigan’s minimum wage on October 1, 2006.  The law will apply to Michigan’s farmworkers, as well as other low-income workers.

The federal minimum wage is currently at $5.85 per hour.

·        Beginning July 1, 2007, the Michigan minimum wage is at $7.15.

·        Beginning July 1, 2008, the Michigan minimum wage will be $7.40.

Even Michigan farmers who pay on a piece-rate basis need pay attention to the new minimum wage.  Piece-rate workers should keep track of their hours worked, because their wages for a workweek should equal at least the minimum wage multiplied by the hours worked.

Should the Michigan minimum wage be lower than the applicable federal minimum wage due to the upcoming increase than the higher minimum wage would apply.
