Sneak Preview of the NEW
MSU Band Hall
We are all familiar with Demonstration Hall - the location of the old Ice Arena, rifle range and multi-purpose room. Well, things are about to change! Beginning on May 5, 2008 the multi-purpose room will undergo a major renovation/remodelling to transform the space into Band Hall. Improvements include storage space for chairs and stands, motor-driven curtains to cover windows and hard srufaces, a suspended accoustic ceiling, large projection screens, and lots more. Check out the
preliminary architectural sketches for Band Hall.

Dr. William "Bill" C. Moffit
1925-2008
"I never see mistakes. I see better ways to do things."
Dear friend of MSU Alumni Band members and former Spartan Marching Band Director, Dr. William "Bill" Moffit, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, in Jacksonville, FL, where he resided with his wife Jeannette.
Bill Moffit started out in the 7th grade as a trombonist in New Philadelphia, Ohio. (Bill said that he chose trombone because his uncle told him the trombones were always in front of the band and right behind the majorettes.) After serving as a musician in the Coast Guard, he returned to Ohio to become director of the Tipp City (Ohio) High School band (1950). He arrived at MSU in 1960 and stayed for nine years serving as Assisiant Director of Bands under Leonard Falcone and Director of the MSU Marching Band. It was during this period that Bill Moffit created his now famous "Patterns of Motion" marching style. A Moffit brainchild, "Patterns of Motion" featured constantly-changing kaleidoscopic patterns which could be seen and appreciated by nearly all viewers in the stadium. Based on a four-person squad system, "Patterns of Motion" would sweep the nation as the new style in marching with college, university, and high school bands everywhere adopting the style. The influences of "Patterns of Motion" are still being felt today, and have led to many more changes in marching band style. Moffit also created the "spinning of the block-S" with which the Spartan Band still traditionally opens its pregame show.
After leaving MSU, Bill Moffit became Director of Bands at the University of Houston (1969) and later Director of Bands at Purdue University (1981). In the Fall of 1984, Bill Moffit was in East Lansing with his Purdue All-American Marching Band performing at the MSU-Purdue football game. He had learned that Dr. Leonard Falcone, Director Emeritus of the MSU Bands, was in failing health and unable to attend the football game that day. To honor his former mentor, Moffit found time in his busy schedule and marched the entire Purdue band down East Lansing's narrow Charles Street to perform a concert for Dr. Falcone in front of his home. A concert that will be long remembered by all MSU Band Alumni.
William "Bill" Moffit will be fondly remembered and sadly missed as a wonderful person, musician and friend to so many MSU Alums.

Alumni Band to Participate
In
MSU Sesquicentennial Parade
October 8, 2005
Come join with fellow MSU Band Alumni for some fun and excitement celebrating MSU's sesquicentennial. We've arranged for a flat bed truck (so no need to actually march in the parade!). This will be the largest MSU parade ever with over 200 units expected. This year it will replace the MSU Homecoming Parade and the Spartan Marching Band and the MSU Alumni Band will be the featured bands.
MSU is asking parade participants to use the parking lot on the corner of Kalamazoo Street and Harrison Road - across from the Breslin Center. MSU will provide a free shuttle bus from the parking lot to Frandor Shopping Center where the parade will begin. At the conclusion of the parade the shuttle bus will take you back to the parking lot.
Parade units will form at the Frandor Shopping Center near Sears by the Frandor water tower. The parade will travel east on Michigan Avenue to Grand River Avenue to Collingwood Drive. It will continue through campus on Circle Drive and end at Spartan Stadium.
Music will be provided prior to the parade (bring your lyre along). Attire for the parade - GREEN and WHITE of course. You can ride on a large flat bed truck or walk alongside. With no home game that weekend, there will be lots and lots of people out to watch the parade.
IMPORTANT - To add your name to the parade marchers list, please get in touch with Jack Nelson - 517-655-3627 or jackn4952@cablespeed.com
Final deadline for getting your name on the list - October 3, 2005!!

Building on the success of the first two years of Friday Night Fanfare, this year’s pre-fall reunion event will be bigger and better— the best yet! Plan now to join with fellow MSU Bands alumni, spouses and friends for dinner and socializing on the Friday evening before the “big game.”

The Hannah Community Center is located at 819 Abbott Road, East Lansing, at the intersection of Abbott Road and Burcham Drive. The evening includes a great meal (catered by Tarpoff ’s Catering—a Lansing tradition), beverages, dessert, door prizes, vintage films of MSU bands, and a visit by Sparty with lots of time for photos.
Total cost for the evening—thanks to the Alumni Band’s underwriting of the event— will be $20 per person (children $10). Space is limited so it is important to get your reservation in early. Reservation deadline is August 1, 2005.
