Secretary's Report
1999 Fall Reunion - September 11, 1999 - Game will begin at 1:00 pm (Eastern Michigan University). We will be following similar schedule as prior years when the game started at the same time.
Golf Outing - September 10, 1999 - Dale reported that the Oaklane Golf Course (Webberville) is being considered for the 1st Annual MSU Alumni Band Golf Outing. It will be held on Friday, September 10, 1999 - the day before the Fall Reunion. Greens fees will be approximately $18 (additional amount for rental of a cart). It will probably be a Scramble Format (depending on how many attend). Band alumni will be alerted to this event via a postcard which will soon be sent. Full information will appear in the June/July issue ofEncore. Nadine Grieve will be contacted regarding organizing some alternative activities for spouses who may not be interested in golf. (museum visits, shopping, etc.).
Next edition of Encore - Deadline for information for the next encore is June 1, 1999. Information should be sent directly to Eddie Deeb. Beryl discussed the idea of including information/news about alumni. She will be considering the preparation of a column (Beryl's Beat??) for the next issue. Other Board members agreed to send Eddie information for including in the issue.
Selective mailing of Encore - The idea of mailing one issue of Encore to all band alumni with additional mailings only going to paid up members of the Association was discussed. Gordon will be preparing an item for inclusion in Encore to alert readers that such an idea is being considered by the Board. Discussion of this idea will be continued at the next Board Meeting.
Activiely involving more members in the Assocaition - Bill Monroe agreed to check over the positive responses to the survey from people who are willing to volunteer to participate on committees. He will be making recommendations at the next Board Meeting regarding how we might proceed in this area. It is the feeling of the Board that it would be good to actively involve others in the affairs of the Association.
Spring Reunion - Beryl reported that total participation at the Spring Reunion was the largest to date with 98 alumni musicians performing. Joe volunteered to send thank you letters to the conductors and Karen DeFord for making the event such a success.
New Computer Equipment - The pruchase of a new laser printer for the Executive Secretary was discussed. It was agreed that it would be a good investment. Joe reported that the computer that Beryl is currently using was donated to the Association at no cost.
Gift for band members as they finish their band involvement - The idea of providing a gift to outgoing band members was discussed. Gordon shared the preliminary sketch of a Block S lapel pin with "MSU Alumni Band" printed on it. It was agreed that the pin would be an appropriate gift (along with one year of free membership in the Association). The question of whether many current members of the Association would be interested in purchasing such a lapel pin was discussed. It was decided to purchase a reasonable number of the pins to be able to gather data/information on how popular it would be. Pins will be available for the Fall Reunion. Gordon will be contacting the company to find out if it will be possible to also have pins made for wearing on a necklace.
Web page update - Joe reported that activity has been gaining on the Association webpage. To check number of hits and other statistical analyses, just click on the small graphic at the very bottom of the page. Digital photos taken at the Spring Reunion are available on the website (http://www.msu.edu/~alumband/).
Job description of Executive Secretary - Beryl reported that she is almost finished preparing the job description for the Executive Secretary.
Big 10 Trivia Game - The offer of receiving 2,000 copies of the "Big 10 Trivia Game" at no cost was discussed. It was decided that the game is outdated and may be a problem trying to distribute it. Joe was asked to write a note to the game author expressing our appreciation for the offer but declining to accept the games.
Next Meeting - The date for the next meeting of the Board has been set for July 25, 1999 (2:00 pm, Buddies in Okemos).
Meeting was adjourned at 4:09 pm.
