Old Business
Status of Encore - The Board members all agreed that the last edition of the Encore was excellent. There was concern that it had taken so long to be prepared as it was originally to have a November deadline for printing.
Next Encore: The next edition of the Alumni Band publication is being prepared and should be ready to go to the printer this week. For the need for a speedy publication Gordon Spink decided to go with a local person that was recommended to him. Spink contacted the Board members a few weeks ago and asked that all information for the publication be sent via email to Spink and he would be responsible to sending it on. Spink thanked all the members that sent material. The Board members strongly suggested that the name Encore be also used for this printing of the Alumni Band Newsletter. It was felt that if that name was not used there would be confusion with the members receiving the printing.
September 9 ~ Fall Alumni Band Reunion. Plans for the fall event were discussed. The schedule of the day and registration for the event and the golf outing will be printed in the next publication. The Board was asked to arrive at 7 am. John Madden will take care of opening the IM West Building, etc. Gordon Spink will contact Old Country Caterers for the food and Dale Calder ("Sound EFX") for the sound system. The theme for the day will be the "Rose Bowl Bands of the Past". John Madden will contact the MSU ticket office for information on ordering football tickets for family members of alumni band members. He will contact Beryl Falcone so the correct information can be put on the form requesting tickets. This order form will also be included in the next publication. Spink will contact the MSU Campus police for parking passes for needed persons. Levine will send out similar letters from last year to invite the guest speakers. The Golf Outing the day before the Saturday Alumni Band was discussed. Motion made and seconded and passed for up to $100 to be used for prizes, etc. The Board is in agreement in the importance of this event and if more money is needed, we will support it. Also it was agreed that the new MSU Alumni tie tacks would be on sale for $5 during the Fall Alumni Band. Approval was also given to the Band Honorary Society to sell items and/or 50/50 lottery tickets. Also approved was the usual payment ($50) to each of Madden's student workers.
Fund Raising/Development: Eddie Deeb has been contacted and he will arrange a meeting between Gordon Spink and Jim Forger (MSU School of Music Chairperson) to discuss the plans for and the role of the MSU Alumni Band organization.
Nominating Committee: Bob Rice (past chair) will chair the committee.
Bylaws: Motion made by Bill Monroe, seconded by Bob Rice to accept the changes in the Bylaws as presented at the last Board meeting and mailed to each Board Member. Motion passed. The changes to the Bylaws will be presented to the entire membership at the Fall Alumni Band event on September 9, 2000.
MSU Alumni Association: Gordon Spink gave a review of the last meeting with Keith Williams and Sandy Soifer of the MSU Alumni Association. It was a very positive meeting and they will be sending us a formal proposal.
Spring Alumni Band Concert: All involved said the Alumni Band Concert with the Symphony Band was excellent. In fact one Board member said it was "the best ever".
New Business
Graduating Seniors: Beryl Falcone and Gordon Spink presented membership information (first year free membership) and pins to the seniors and those not returning to any of the "MSU Bands". The students appreciate this gesture and the pins. They were encouraged to join and attend the events.
Getting more people involved in the Alumni Band: Beryl Falcone and Bill Monroe have met on this important matter and they reported on their findings. They feel that one of the most important ways to get people involved is to have a well done, specific job description. We will be hearing more on this in the future.
Reply to letter Gordon Spink sent to President McPherson on the MSU Alumni Band Board's concern that appropriate money for the Citrus Bowl was not allocated to the Spartan Marching Band. Spink did receive a reply from Clarence Underwood, MSU Athletic Director.
Executive Secretary Job Description: Beryl Falcone is still working on this. She reported that the job gets bigger and different most every day. (Beryl Falcone and Bill Monroe made a deal: If Beryl Falcone would prepare a copy of her job description by July 1st, Bill Monroe would get connected to the Internet by July 1st. The Board looks forward to both happenings.)
European Alumni Band Trip: Nelson reported there are over 65 players signed up and they still need percussion players. Date of the trip is June 2001.
Bartlett Asks to be Replaced as Historian. The Board thanked Dale Bartlett for his many years as a member of the MSU Alumni Band board as the historian. Bartlett will keep involved with the group and specifically the golf outing.
Madden gave a brief presentation on the many positive changes that have recently occurred between the Athletic Department and the School of Music (specifically his position, the marching and other pep bands). It was suggested that we invite Jim Forger (School of Music Chairperson) to come to a Board meeting and give the details.
Next Publication Date: We are going with a date of November 1, 2000 for the next issue of the Alumni band publication.
It was suggested that a copy of the publication be scanned into the website of the Alumni band.
It was determined that the NEXT MEETING of the MSU Alumni Band would be July 23, 2 pm, Buddies, Okemos.
Meeting adjourned.
