Minutes
July 27, 1998
Meeting was called to order at 2:02 pm by President Bob Rice
Present: Doug Goodrich, Bob Rice, Beryl Falcone, John Whitwell, Joe Levine.
Secretary's Report
Minutes from the May 3, 1998 meeting were approved as written.
Treasurer's Report
Doug Goodrich provided the financial report for the period May 3, 1998 - July 26, 1998:
Ending Check Balance $2,201.49
Ending Savings Balance $9,108.55
Certificate of Deposit (2/28/98) $5,119.47
Total Cash on Hand $16,429.51*
*Includes anticipated expenditures of $8,441.40
The Treasurer's Report was accepted.
Old Business
Scandinavian Tour - The trip was a tremendous success. Though the performances at the amusement parks didn't yield the size audience that was hoped for, all other aspects were excellent. Joe Levine requested a couple of photos to be added to the web site.
Web Page - Joe Levine reported that the "draft" web site is already yielding contacts with MSU band alums. Two alums found the web site and requested information about the Fall Reunion. Another person emailed a request to try and locate a former band alum. Thanks to the assistance of John Whitwell, the MSU Alumni Band will be getting its own account on the MSU computer system (and MSU bands will be paying for the costs assicayed with the account). This will greatly facilitate the use of electronic communication for the MSU Alumni Band. Plans are for Beryl Falcone to check/answer email from the account and for Joe Levine to establish/maintain the website (both email and website will use the same MSU account). Hopefully the website will be up and running in time for the Fall Reunion. (The current/temporary web address is http://www.msu.edu/user/levine/alumband) We will be attempting to get the email address: alumband@msu.edu and the website address: www.msu.edu/user/alumband/alumband
Music Commission - John Whitwell reported that good progress is being made on the music commission. The plan is for the Alumni Band to perform the premiere of the composition at the Spring Reunion.
Progress on New Band Building on Campus - John Whitwell briefly discussed the possibility of a building on campus specifically devoted to use by the MSU bands. He said informal discussions have begun but nothing definite to report at this time.
New Business
Fall Reunion - The Board discussed the different aspects of the Fall Reunion to be held on August 29, 1998.
Time Schedule - Seems to be appropriate based upon prior years experience and also later game start time for this year's game.
8:30 am - Social hour/Registration - IM West Sports Arena (Gym)
It would be helpful if Board Members could arrive at the Sports Arena around 7 am to assist in setting everything up.
9:30 am - Indoor music rehearsal
11:00 am - Move outdoors for marching rehearsal
11:15 am - Marching rehearsal
12:30 pm - Lunch
2:15 pm - Marching run-through (Landon Field)
2:45 pm - March to the Stadium
2:55 pm - Concert outside tunnel area
3:15 pm - Move through tunnel to seats/pregame position
Rehearsal Building - IM West Sports Arena will again be used. Bob Rice will be checking with John Madden for details regarding key for entrance, time building will be open, etc. etc.
Food from Caterer - Bob Rice will be ordering food from the caterer. He will again be ordering a variety including bagels, cream cheese, juice - in addition to coffee & donuts - as was done last year.
Tables and Chairs - It was again clarified that no tables/chairs will be rented this year. Bob Rice will be checking with john Madden regarding the borrowing of sufficient tables and chairs from the Marching Band.
People to Speak - Joe Levine will be sending out letters of invitation to the following people to make short welcoming talks to the band:
Peter MacPherson
Nick Sabin
Keith Williams
Merritt Norvell
James Forger
Directors - Ken Bloomquist and Dave Catron have been invited to guest conduct the band again this year. Bob Rice has personally invited them.
Presents - Presents for the oldest, the person travelling the farhest, etc. were discussed. No definite decision was made. Beryl Falcone will be handling this as usual.
Music - A theme for this year's show was briefly discussed. No definite recommendation was developed.
Parking Permits - Gordon Spink has received special parking permits for those that need them.
Election of Officers for Next Year - Bob Rice reported that he has heard nothing from the Nominating Committee that he appointed. Hopefully a person will be identified to accept the Vice President position - since it requires a 6 year committment. Bob Rice will be checking into the progress of the Nominating Committee but encouraged others on the Board to suggest names of potential Vice President candidates.
Recruiting new Graduates to Join the Association - Beryl Falcone discussed strategies for disseminating information to members of all of the MSU bands for membership in the association. This has not been done very systematically in the past. She will try to cover all of the bands at the end of the Spring semester and the Spartan Marching Band at the end of the Fall Semester. Joe Levine suggested that a non-dated flyer could be developed that would describe the Alumni band Association and made available to all MSU band members. The flyer would include a tear-out form for sending in. It was also suggested that the first year Association dues for a newly graduated band member be waived. This idea was greeted very positively and the Board "encouraged" the originator of the idea (Joe Levine) to move ahead and get a flyer designed in time for the conclusion of the Fall semester.
Next Meeting - The date for the next meeting of the Board has been set for September 20, 1998 (2:00 pm, Buddies in Okemos).
Meeting was adjourned at 3:35 pm.
