Old Business
Fall Reunion - Bob Rice reported that one table is still reported missing from those that were rented for the event. Search parties are being organized and hopefully the culprit will be found. If not, it may cost as much as $175 to replace the table.
Scandinavian Tour Report - Henry Nelson reported that concert sites and accommodations are fairly well set (Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Bergen - a total of 13 days). It appears that +/- 130 will be participating. A request for funds from the MSU Alumni Band was tabled until later in the meeting.
Eddie Deeb - Eddie Deeb reported that he recently had a smashing "35th Anniversary of Working in the Food Industry" party - complete with an appearance by members of the Spartan Marching. Band. It brought back many fond memories.
Strolling Spartans - Bob Rice reported that the Strolling Spartans performed twice during December at MSU basketball games. The group of about 80 musicians comprised about 50% alumni and 50% current band members. A good time was had by all.
Alumni Association - Gordon Spink reported that he met with Keith Williams (Director of the MSU Alumni Association) and that Keith is very supportive of the MSU Alumni Band, has no desire to exercise any control over the group, and is willing to work cooperatively with the Alumni Band either as a constituent group or on an informal basis. Gordon will ask Keith to make available Alumni Association information for the next (April) Alumni Band Concert.
Alumni Magazine - Bob Bao, editor of the Alumni Magazine is willing to consider an article on the MSU Alumni Band and other ways to share information about our organization with MSU Alumni. Gordon Spink volunteered to contact Bob Bao and to further pursue the idea of an article/other information on the Alumni Band in the magazine.
Alumni Band Newsletter - Eddie Deeb reported that our Newsletter is now going to all staff of the MSU Alumni Office, all coaches, Big 10 Band Directors, and others.
New Business
Newsletter - Discussion of the Levine/Spink proposal regarding the further defining of specific issues of the Newsletter going to all alumni of the MSU bands and/or only MSU Alumni Band members.
Gordon Spink moved that the Levine/Spink proposal be implemented; that one issue each year (a general issue) be sent to all alumni of the MSU bands and two issues (specialized issues focusing on details of the two yearly events) be sent only to MSU Alumni Band members. The motion was seconded and passed.
Relationship with the Touring Group - Discussion of "A Proposal in Support of Inviting the ‘Overseas Touring Band of MSU Alumni' to Become a Part of the MSU Alumni Band."
Joe Levine moved that "A Proposal in Support of Inviting the ‘Overseas Touring Band of MSU Alumni' to Become a Part of the MSU Alumni Band." be accepted with two modifications - the Touring Band be considered as an Ad Hoc Committee (thereby not necessitating any changes to the Bylaws); and, the Touring Band have an Ex Officio seat on the Board of the MSU Alumni Band. The motion was seconded and passed.
Request for Funds for the Touring Band - Henry Nelson requested that the MSU Alumni Band provide funds ion the amount of $750 to help with expenses of the upcoming Scandinavian Tour.
Eddie Deeb moved that up to $750 be provided to the Touring Band Ad Hoc Committee to assist with expenses associated with the Scandinavian Tour (the money to be paid against receipts). The motion was seconded and passed.
Spring Reunion - Bob Rice will be contacting John Whitwell to discuss arrangements for the Spring Reunion.
Thank You's - Dale Bartlett expressed appreciation to Eddie Deeb, Gordon Spink, Joe Levine, Bob Rice and Doug Goodrich for the work they had done prior to the meeting to help things run smoothly.
Spartan Marching Band's appearance at bowl games - Gordon Spink reported on the appearance of the Spartan Marching Band in Hawaii (Gordon felt it was his duty to travel that distance as a representative of the Board so that observational data could be collected - it's hard work but someone had to do it). He shared additional information about policies relating to the funding of SMB's appearance at post-season bowl games.
