What’s been happening in Women’s Studies?
This semester the MSU Women’s Studies Program was pleased to take part
in two art events. The annual WS fall open house was combined with
an art show featuring the works of students from the MSU Studio Art Program.
The open house took place in early October and was a wonderful success.
Linda Cook, Tyeshiea Johnson, Melissa Ketz, Kathy Lookingland, Jaya Swami,
and Julia Warner, all women artists from the MSU Art Department, brought
several of their own works. By the time the doors opened, the ordinary
MSU Union parlor had been transformed by paintings, sculptures, charcoal
drawings, prints, and yards of artfully draped fabric. Those who stopped
to visit found plenty to talk about and artist eager to discuss their works.
Miriam Schapiro, painter, printmaker, sculptor and leading figure in the
Feminist Art Movement was also a presence on campus this fall. For much
of the semester the Kresge Art Museum featured a large exhibition of Schapiro’s
work. Women’s Studies had the honor of organizing and facilitating
an informal conversation with Schapiro. Dr Ladenson, Women’s Studies
Program director, facilitated the discussion. The event took place
in the exhibition gallery. Surrounded by her own works in homage
to earlier generations of women artists, Schapiro talked with students
and faculty about the political and aesthetic challenges made by the Feminist
Art Movement.
Internships for Undergrads
The Feminist Majority and the Feminist Majority Foundation have two
exciting opportunities for feminist college students looking for experience
working with a national non-profit women’s rights organization. Students
will be full time interns in Washington D.C. and the Los Angeles offices.
