Overview of
Women's Studies Courses

The purposes of the Women’s Studies Program include the examining of women’s diverse roles in culture and society as well as the integrating of a new understanding of women into traditional academic fields.  A curriculum emphasis is placed on women’s cultural, ethnic, racial and national identities.

In such areas as journalism, communications, business law, social work, higher education and counseling, a student can move into a career that has a focus on women, and a Women’s Studies background can thus enhance career opportunities.  In career areas that have no direct focus on women, an awareness of the history, culture, and thought of women, and an understanding of sexism, affirms women’s identities and bolsters their confidence and ability in fields traditionally restricted to men.

Students can make Women’s Studies courses to satisfy  university and disciplinary requirements, and as electives.  Those students interested in declaring a major in Women’s Studies should contact the Women’s Studies Advisor, 355-4495.
