VP Note: Changing roles

In an effort to organize our office to support MSU’s
research enterprise more effectively, we have initiated some changes.
Loran Bieber, who had been serving as interim assistant vice president
for research ethics and standards since David Wright’s departure from
that position last fall, came to the end of his contract on March 31. We
appreciate Loran’s willingness to fill that position over the past half
year. He will continue part time as the University Intellectual Integrity
Officer.
We have asked senior assistant vice president Cordell
Overby to take leadership over all the compliance areas: human subjects,
animal subjects, export controls, and environmental and health safety (see
article for details). To fulfill his new assignments, Cordell will
relinquish his involvement in some of the budget areas he has handled in the
past. For now, requests for VPRGS support for start-up packages and cost
shares should come by e-mail to me (gray@msu.edu)
or to Brenda Minott (minott@msu.edu).
We’re working to develop an online system to facilitate that process.
Over the next few months we’ll spell out in these pages
and elsewhere more details of these and other changes as they occur. We hope
they’ll help MSU’s research community work more efficiently and more
effectively.
J. Ian Gray
Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies
