Analytical Core Facilities at MSUThe concept of MSU Core Analytical Facilities resulted from the University Research Council (URC) and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (OVPRGS) working with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop a plan for supporting needed analytical infrastructure at MSU. At this time, core facilities cover the following major technology areas:
In each case, several facilities have been grouped under the umbrella of one of the areas. The grouped facilities are expected to coordinate their services to minimize duplication and to maximize the effectiveness of MSU support. Each area will be asked to select a facility director who will serve as the coordinator for the area and summarize the technology area’s general state of affairs for a URC Science and Technology (S&T) Committee on a periodic basis. The S&T Committee comprises the research associate deans from the Colleges of Engineering, Human Medicine, Natural Science, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine; the associate director of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station; and the Assistant Vice President for Research Services. The S&T Committee will provide input to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies with respect to the colleges’ research priorities as they relate to campus analytical facilities and associated space requirements. The S&T Committee’s deliberations and recommendations will inherently reflect the concerns of facility directors and operators given the periodic presentations required of each of the four technology coordinators. The underlying goal for the core facilities is the strategic coordination of capability and the leveraging of resources within each of the four major technology areas to achieve the broadest benefit to the MSU research enterprise. Those facilities that wish to be considered for future inclusion are encouraged to explore establishing a fit in one of the four main technology areas with the facilities that are presently included and to seek a strategic prioritization from one or more college administration.
