The UUD's Learning Resource Center unit serves the students and faculty of MSU. The Learning Resources Center (LRC) serves the students and faculty of MSU. The main office is located in 202 Bessey Hall, and is open year round. During the academic year, the LRC maintains three off-site evening tutoring programs to better serve students. Those sites are located in Akers Hall, Brody Hall, and Wilson Hall.
In addition to tutoring, some of the specific services the LRC provides include:
Support Study Skills and Personal Development
- appropriate study skill strategies
- referrals to improve particular study skills
- assistance to students in the development of time management and decision-making skills
- identification of academic and personal resources
- assistance with the use of the Schedule Planner and Degree Navigator
Course Specific One-on-one Tutoring
The LRC employs undergraduate tutors who are in their junior and senior years, who have at least a 3.5 grade point average, and who have a 3.5 in any class they tutor. In addition, tutors are trained in effective study skills techniques; reading strategies, test-taking fundamentals and learning styles. The tutors work one-on-one with students in a variety of first- and second-year classes, helping students not only with the content of the classes, but with developing effective study strategies as well.
Programs For Students
Full-time staff offer seminars and workshops on such study-related topics as Reading Strategies, Time Management, Learning Styles, Note-Taking, Study Skills, Test-Taking Strategies, Preparing for Final Examinations, Coping Skills for College, and several other related subjects. These seminars and workshops are offered at the main location in Bessey Hall, and at many off-site locations around and near the campus.
Faculty/Staff Programs
In addition to working with students, the LRC also provides workshops for faculty and staff in areas related to pedagogical concerns. Staff presents workshops on subjects such as reading comprehension, assessment techniques, and other academic and learning issues. LRC Specialists are available to speak to advisers, pre-professional groups, student groups, and classes.
Handicapper Accessible Computer/Learning Lab
The LRC operates a computer-learning lab in room 204 Bessey Hall. All LRC computers are Internet-ready, connected to the MSU network, and run educational software in areas such as math, reading, and physics. These software programs enhance student skills in these areas. Faculty members provide study guides, and previous exams for many ATL and ISS classes are available. Additionally, faculty provide audiotapes of lectures in the LRC lab, and there are supplemental videotapes in such areas as Algebra and other mathematics courses.
