REGULATING
AGENCIES FOR ANIMAL CARE
Michigan State University is registered with several different state and federal agencies as a research and teaching facility. MSU is inspected at random, without prior notice, by regulatory personnel. MSU's own Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
(IACUC) inspects every animal care site on campus at least twice a year. These state and federal agencies include the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Michigan Department of Agriculture
(MDA), Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS). MSU adheres to these agencies' regulations and maintains the highest standards of animal care at all campus facilities.
MSU follows these laws and guidelines:
- U.S. Department of Agriculture: Animal Welfare Act
- U.S. Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
- The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
- Michigan: Dogs and Cats in Research Act
- Michigan: Public Health Code
- Michigan State University: Policies for Animal Use and Care
