College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

The mission of the Native American Institute (NAI) is to:

Provide training, technical assistance, research, and educational assistance to Native American Tribes and organizations in Michigan. Serve Michigan officials and lawmakers by offering periodic information on policy alternatives regarding Indian issues. Promote and enhance the public's knowledge and awareness of Michigan Indian communities, initiatives, history, and culture.

The Native American Institute (NAI) was authorized by the Michigan State University Board of Trustees in October 1981. The Institute was established to aid North American Indian organizations, non-profit and tribal governments, plan and prepare to meet the present and future needs of their constituents. Over the years, NAI has expanded its role to include research and technical assistance in fundraising and grantsmanship in an effort to further promote Indian self-sufficiency and self-determination. The Native American Institute is the only such Institute in the Great Lakes Region.

Organizational Placement: The institute was established in 1981 as a component of the Center for Urban Development, which was located within the College of Urban Affairs, which later became known as Urban Affairs Programs. As of July 1st, 2003, the Native American Institute is located within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
