Present: G. Allen, M. Belsky, G. Blievernicht, S. Blosser, J. Eulenberg, D. Forro, M. Hestenes, M. Hudson, T. Hwang, N. Lucas, J. Renuk, R. Wittick; Interpreters: J. Doerr, A. Rodgers.
1. The meeting was called to order by Eulenberg at 2:06 p.m.
2. Minutes of the 1/28/98 meeting were accepted as revised (Lucas; Hwang).
3. Eulenberg announced that he would like to have drafts of all text sections of the APP&R recommendations ready by the next meeting.
4. Eulenberg read aloud Hudson's report on the "talking Signs" request for the 1999-2000 year. Blosser commented that he has noticed a huge number of signs on campus, suggesting that this issue may become a large one for the committee and for the university.
5. Hudson submitted a final draft of the OPHS request.
6. Eulenberg reported that he has received a letter from a severely hearing impaired MSU faculty member, inquiring whether the university has technology to translate from audio tape directly to text. Hudson expressed his doubts. Belsky suggested that what this person needs is a captioner, such as Karen Rivard, who is available at some cost. Allen commented that he had recently seen an ad for a stenographic speech recognition system with a tape input. Blosser asked whether a related audio tape to phoneme string exists; Eulenberg and Allen concurred that there does not currently appear to be one. Eulenberg asked whether Rivard works at all for Broadcasting Services; Blievernicht replied in the negative, but noted further that the professor in question has used their services in the past.
7. The meeting was adjourned (Hestenes; Blosser) at 2:44 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
George D. Allen, Recording Secretary
