From winning the Big Ten Conference tournament championship after starting the season unranked to receiving Big Ten Player and Coach of the Year accolades—and now selected as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament—the Spartan men’s basketball team has demonstrated tremendous skill and spirit as it proves itself to be among the best in the nation.
MSU earns No. 1 seed in West Region
After winning the Big Ten tournament title over No. 7 Ohio State University, MSU has earned a No. 1 seed in the West Region in the NCAA tournament. It marks the first time since the 2000–01 season and fifth time in program history the Spartans have earned a top seed.
The Spartans will take on LIU-Brooklyn in the second round of the NCAA tournament at 9:20 p.m. ET Friday, March 16. The game will air on TBS and Spartan Sports Network.
Green named Big Ten Player of the Year
MSU senior forward Draymond Green was selected Big Ten Player of the Year by the league’s coaches and media.
In addition to the Big Ten Player of the Year award, Green was also named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and Sporting News’ First-Team All-America.
Green was also named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team by the league's coaches. In addition, sophomore guard Keith Appling earned third-team all-conference honors, while freshman Branden Dawson found a spot on the All-Freshman team and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors from the league's media.
Izzo named National Coach of the Year, Big Ten Coach of the Year
MSU head coach Tom Izzo has been named CBSSports.com National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Izzo guided a team that was not ranked in the preseason Top 25 to a 13-5 conference record, capturing a share of the Big Ten title. For Izzo, it was the seventh Big Ten championship of his career, ranking fifth all-time among league coaches.
