 Guest lectures, Mark Sullivan, Music

This is an interdisciplinary course about modernism in aesthetic theory and practice.  Taking Enlightenment perspectives on art and its context as our point of departure, we review some intersections of art and reflection during the course of the twentieth century.  Theorists include Kant, Hegel, Marx, Adorno, Benjamin, and Burger.  Works from the visual arts, music, literature, and film will be discussed, with reference to such figures as Rafael, Cezanne, Picasso, Beethoven, Mahler, Ligetti, Keats, Eliot, Ginsberg, Brecht, and Godard.

Students will write occasional short papers and a term paper, be expected to particiapte in discussion, and be invited to explore the possibilities of  computer technology for developing the course.
