| We will explore some of the ways in which
Hegel has proven to be a pivotal figure in modern thought.
He offers searching criticisms of the empiricist, formalist, and positivist
tendencies that remain influential today. And he offers ideas and
arguments that have been reworked in various attempts to provide alternative
approaches, for example, marxism, existentialism, phenomenology, and even
recent historicist trends in anglo-american thought. Despite
his importance, few would describe themselves as hegelians today, and Hegel
remains a favorite target of philosophical polemic. Though we will
concentrate on some of his most important texts, we will discuss the complicated
relationship between Hegel and the evolution of subsequent thought. |
