EXPECTATIONS

IAH 211C -Discussion Sections

This portion of the course is designed to allow students an opportunity to discuss the course materials in smaller groups. This should allow for the exchange of ideas in a more intimate and comfortable, yet still academic, atmosphere.

Objectives:

1. To reinforce the overall course objectives, as well as to supplement the regular class sessions' lectures, readings, and films.

2. To enhance students' critical reading and writing skills.

3. To help students prepare for course examinations and written assignments.

Structure & Assignments:

Discussion will be the primary element of these required sections. Therefore, it is imperative that students read the assigned materials in advance and come to class ready to discuss the readings.

Each week (except for the week of the mid-term, research paper, Thanksgiving holiday, and finals week), students will be required to bring a one page reaction paper to their discussion sections. In these papers:

*The students must briefly give their reactions to the week's readings. For example, how did the material differ from what you were previously taught? What did you find most striking? Do Not Simply Write a Summary of the Readings.

* In addition, the student will respond to a question or theme posited by the T A prior to the week's readings.

* Finally, write 2 questions which you would like to discuss with the class during our meetings.

These papers are to be typed with 12 point font (preferably Times New Roman) and one-inch margins. There is no need for extensive headings -please just type your name and section number on the last line of your paper. You are to bring a printed copy of your paper with you each week which you will turn in at the end of class.

Grading:
Your participation, which includes attendance and the reaction papers, will count as 15% of your total course grade.
