Fans cheer on the MSU men's basketball team from the Breslin Center as they play North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament's final four in 2005

Celebrations

Most MSU students plan to watch the Spartans during the NCAA tournament and over 90% of them plan to celebrate in their home, apartment, etc. If you plan to celebrate outside after the game you "need to know" the following:

  • Don't block the street or the sidewalks.
  • Keep moving. Avoid large crowds.
  • A gathering on public or private property can be declared an unlawful assembly. If declared as such, leave the area immediately.
  • If you don't leave an unlawful assembly, you are breaking the law and can be arrested.
  • People who assault others, destroy property or incite a riot are breaking the law and may be arrested. Students could also be expelled and/or suspended from their university, college and/or high school.
  • Cooperate with the police, as they have the legal authority to tell you what to do.
  • MSU Police will be equipped to videotape interactions with police for documentation and/or for later identification of individuals engaging in unlawful behavior.
  • If you believe your rights have been violated by a police officer, obtain the officer's badge number and consider filing a formal complaint later.
