Strong people make strong communities. As the pioneer land-grant institution, Michigan State University takes seriously the responsibility of a public university to the society it serves. By engaging people from all backgrounds, through elements as diverse as MSU Extension and the Office of Outreach & Engagement, we can work to understand and meet the needs of individuals and their communities.

Michigan State University embraces the idea that medicine is not the only means of healing. At MSU’s Community Music School—the outreach division of the College of Music—certified music therapists provide clinical services for mid-Michigan residents with disabilities and illnesses.

Music therapy is a specialized health care profession that uses specific techniques designed to improve communication, support physical rehabilitation, alleviate pain, enhance memory, and promote wellness.

The Community Music School’s music therapy program provides treatment for people with special needs that often can be addressed effectively with music therapy techniques. Patients receive clinically tested treatment for conditions that include medical illnesses, developmental disabilities, physical impairments, emotional disturbances, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety, and aging.

Music therapists at the Community Music School provide therapy to more than 250 patients each year. In addition to the music school—located in East Lansing—services are provided in community settings through collaborations with Hospice of Lansing, Okemos Public Schools, and Peckham, Inc., a nonprofit community rehabilitation organization.
