An MSU student has covered more of the globe in one summer than most people will in a lifetime—all in the name of research.

Nick Micinski is a student in James Madison College majoring in international relations and political theory and constitutional democracy, with a specialization in Muslim studies. He received a grant to travel to seven countries on four continents during the summer of 2007. During his travels, he conducted interviews to learn how non-governmental organizations help Muslim immigrants integrate into their new countries while retaining cultural ties to their homelands. For this, he made use of his language studies at MSU along with some help from translators.

With the help of MSU faculty members, Micinski established contacts in Muslim communities located in the United States, Brazil, France, Norway, Russia, India, and Singapore. This first-hand research project—the foundation for his senior thesis—also served as preparation for an international career.

Throughout his global trek, Micinski kept a personal blog that includes his own photos and videos, as well as producing a blog for his hometown newspaper, the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
