Resources for Jobs in Publishing

Amy Nalatte

Overview

This assignment was proposed in the Introduction to Professional Writing course at Michigan State University. This website is geared towards recent college graduates who, like me, are interested in finding jobs in the areas of writing, editing, and publishing. This collection of resources is unique because it not only has general links to resources for finding jobs, but it also has links to specific publishing companies that advertise jobs on their sites. Additionally, more specific to my goal of where I would ideally like to work one day, I also narrowed my searches down to publishing jobs in and around the Chicago area. This site is divided into two categories:

Publishing Companies who Advertise Jobs

Houghton Mifflin

Based out of Boston, this highly accomplished book publishing company actively searches for new additions to their team. You can search through jobs on the site and even apply directly online. Also, there are opportunities for student internships (mainly in the Boston area) during the summer.

Random House

This thriving publishing business has a number of branches within it. What's especially encouraging for recent college grads is that you can search for entry-level positions and internships on the site. Most of the positions are located in the New York area for anyone interested in living in the Big Apple.

Holtzbrink Publishing Group

This company is based out of Germany and has several US publishers. There is no search option on this site, but it lists all the currently available positions. All the jobs are located in New York unless noted otherwise. The site has links to all their US publishers, which is a good way to research what else is out there.

Thomson Careers

Thomson is a huge company divided into many sections, one being publishing. This website has a job search for any number of the company's sections based on whether you are an undergrad, an experienced professional, have an advanced degree, or are a Thomson alumni.

General Resources to Find Jobs in Publishing

Mediabistro

This site has job listings on all things media: book, newspaper & magazine publishing, television, radio, art/design, and more. The search options are especially helpful; you can search by industry, location, or duration (i.e. full time, part time, internship, etc.). This site also provides current news articles on important topics in the industry.

Bookjobs

Bookjobs is an awesome resource not only for finding jobs, but also for learning about the publishing industry. It has a list of the different types of publishing, a glossary of terms related to the field, and a compilation of the various publishing programs that universities offer. The search option allows users to search for either jobs or internships.

Editor & Publisher Jobs

The search option on this website is very extensive. It is helpful when searching for jobs because it spotlights top-notch jobs right away as suggestions. It also allows users to save checked jobs so that they don't have to search again to find the same job. Jobs can be searched by duration of time, category of job, location, and when the job was posted on the site.

The Write Job

This website allows users to search for jobs based specifically on a career in writing. There are freelance positions, medical and technical writing positions, jobs specific only to the book publishing industry, magazine publishing, etc. It is also helpful because it tells you when the position was listed in the directory.

Magazine Publishers of America

Specific to magazines, this website has a search function that breaks down the different sectors of the industry. You can search jobs in the areas of advertising, design, circulation, human resources, marketing, management and more.

Publishing Companies who Advertise Jobs

Quarasan Careers

Quarasan is a publishing company that specializes in educational materials for grades K-12. This site has a "careers" section that lists all the benefits the company offers. It also provides a compilation of links to all the different job titles located within the company. Clicking on each job title opens a pop-up window with a description of the job (including responsibilities or duties) and qualifications that the ideal candidate would have. It also tells you exactly how to apply and where to send the application.

Tyndale House Publishers

Tyndale is a Christian publishing company that specializes in children’s literature. They produce works of fiction, non-fiction, bibles, children's books, and books in Spanish. Their website includes a career center with a job search function for positions within the company. These jobs are especially good for anyone with a religious background or fluency in Spanish. You can also apply directly online for available positions.

General Resources for Publishing Jobs in Chicago

Craig's List

Chicago's Craig's List provides classified writing and editing jobs in and around the Chicago area. It is updated daily with descriptions of jobs and information on how to apply. Full time jobs, internships, and freelance jobs are all included in this extensive list of varied jobs. Some different job titles include: Technical Writer, Proposal Writer, Writer/Career Consultant, Web Content Writer, Research Editor, Copyeditor, etc.

Chicago Book Clinic

The Chicago Book Clinic is actually an organization for professionals in the field of publishing. However, you don't have to be a member to view the jobline site of their website. The positions are listed by date and include a variety of positions within the field. Another good thing about this list is that it notes when the position is filled, but still leaves the job description posted. This is helpful for recent college grads to get an idea of what some of these positions would entail.
