Overview
In the world of communication, there are several different mediums to make information available to groups of people. Perhaps the most simple, other than speech, is the written word. Writing is an incredible tool, making it possible to communicate ideas or thoughts or basically anything to almost anybody, provided it's in the correct language. Having the correct language is important, but not just speaking in the way of dialects. Writing has its own variety of languages, applicable to different audiences.
To avoid complication and prevent problems that could arise from the incredible number of documentation in the world, guidelines have been made. These guidelines are more commonly known as "formats", three of the more popular being MLA, APA, and Chicago. Different audiences need their information provided to them in certain, specialized ways, and it is through formats like these that the process is made simpler, less confusing, and more efficent for the purpose of communication through writing.
