Writers' Bloc
Writers' Bloc is the official student organization of the Professional Writing program. The goal of Writer's Bloc is to provide support, resources, and community-building opportunities to professional writers and MSU students. All Professional Writing students are invited to attend any of the sessions listed below; don’t feel as if you are only limited to those immediately applicable to your student standing. In fact, I encourage everyone to attend--freshmen through super seniors! Feel free, also, to bring friends to the workshops. All workshops held on Fridays from 2-4:00pm in 317 Bessey Hall. Snacks will be provided.
Workshop 1: Exploring and Explaining Professional Writing

Friday, January 18 (noon-2pm)
This workshop is designed for us to create a collaborative definition of and identity for "professional writing," and to explore the ways in which we can explain our work to others--friends, family, and potential employers. This workshop will address:
- exploring the world of professional writing—intellectually and professionally
- explaining to others (e.g., internship directors, recruiters, interviewers) what professional writing is
Workshop 2: Preparing Resumes; Writing Cover Letters
Friday, February 1 (noon-2pm)

This workshop is designed for EVERYONE--whether you have a fairly polished resume or you're just getting started on one; this workshop will address:
- reviewing example resumes and cover letters
- understanding the goals of resumes and cover letters and different types of each
- brainstorming resume content
- designing resumes
- writing cover letters
Workshop 3: Internship and Job Searching
Friday, February 22 (noon-2pm)

This workshop will address options for internships and for life after graduation. Whether you are interested in an extended internship, graduate school, or a job with a nonprofit or company, this workshop will prepare you for approaching these options. The workshop will cover:
- exploring various options (e.g., grad school, extended internship, employment)
- researching internships
- researching jobs
- organizing yourself and your materials during the internship or job search
Workshop 4: Preparing and Presenting Your Professional Portfolio
Friday, March 14 (noon-2:00pm)

A professional portfolio is crucial for job searching and interviewing. This workshop will address:
- understanding different types of portfolios
- exploring print and digital portfolios
- brainstorming portfolio contents; editing and polishing portfolio pieces
- preparing and designing a print portfolio; preparing and designing a digital portfolio
- using and maintaining a portfolio
- prepping to present your portfolio
This session will also include some hands-on work time.

So you've landed an interview--now what? Knowing proper etiquette and anticipating the sorts of questions you'll be asked and the sorts of questions you should ask are crucial to succeeding in an interview. This workshop will cover:
- understanding interview basics
- preparing for the interview
- anticipating questions
- asking questions
- following up after the interview
