Kidwell received his Ph.D. in English from the Ohio State University in 2003, with candidacy examinations in critical theory, American literature to 1900, and 20th Century British and American Literature. His dissertation, Reading the State Writing: Michel Foucault and the Production of American Political Culture, works with Foucault’s thought regarding discourse, power, and government to develop a theoretical methodology for the critique of American political culture, deploying that analytic in studies of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, the campaign against venereal diseases in the early 20th century, and AIDS prevention in the 1980s. He is currently working on revising his dissertation for publication.
Prior to teaching at MSU, Kidwell taught at the Ohio State University (1993-1997 and 2002-2003) and at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1997-2002). In addition to introductory and advanced composition, he has taught courses in literature, film, and critical theory. Kidwell was also a journalist in Washington, D.C., from 1980-1989.
