PATRICIA JULIUS
Emeritus Professor
Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures
517/432-2556 (office); 517/353-5250 (fax)
courses: WRA 1004: Preparation for College Writing; WRA 125 Writing: American Ethnic & Racial Experience; WRA 150 Writing: Evolution of American Thought; SUPER, a summer program for at-risk students; IAH 221C: Women Writers from a Global Perspective
Julius wrote and directed a history of Black music, A Spoonful of Sugar, first performed live by students in her courses and later filmed by WKAR-TV for presentation on PBS.
Women hard-boiled mystery writers (e.g., Marcia Muller) have been the focus of much of Julius' recent research; she has focused specifically on their reflections of popular culture. She has also presented papers on Sarah Paretsky's and Sue Grafton's work.
Although her research spans many facets of American popular culture, Julius has recently written on Margaret Frazer's Medieval Mysteries series, as well as on the purveyors of vampire tales--those writers, producers, and filmmakers who have found voice, publication venue, and a public following since Anne Rice opened the door some 25 years ago.
