Birdwell began teaching at M.S.U. in 1966 and retired from the Department of American Thought and Language in July 2001. She has presented papers and published articles in American popular entertainment, especially in theatre. Birdwell has performed with many area theatres: the Okemos Barn Theatre, the Lansing Riverwalk Theatre, the M.S.U. Performing Arts and Summer Circle Theatres, and the BoarsHead professional regional theatre, where she last appeared in their 2001 production of Inherit the Wind. For the past three years she has been the faculty resource person for the Friends of Summer Circle trip to the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
