Welcome
to Music Theory at Michigan State University! The department consists of
six faculty members with diverse interests and areas of specialization,
including music cognition, music theory pedagogy, twentieth century analytical
techniques, computer assisted music analysis, and nineteenth century form
and style. We offer the M.M. degree in music theory with an emerging emphasis
on music theory pedagogy.
We
also provide instruction for the approximately 500 undergraduate and graduate
students in the school of music. Graduate assistantships in music
theory are available. Graduate assistants play a vital role as teaching
assistants in the undergraduate theory curriculum, leading recitation sections,
teaching ear training and theory for non-majors, and helping faculty members
run the core theory courses.
