·      Sally thinks the war in Iraq was justified

·      Tom thinks the war was not justified

 

·      Wendell thinks abortion is always morally wrong

·      Violet thinks abortion is sometimes morally permissible

 

Opinion – A belief that is typically not fully supported by evidence on a matter where we expect different views to be held.

 

Mere opinions – reactions based on little more than a gut response.

 

Considered opinions – reactions based on systematic theorizing about premises and a careful appraisal of relevant factual evidence.

 


Argument – A set of claims put forward in an attempt to show that some further claim is rationally acceptable. Arguments are attempts to prove or justify a claim.

 

Conclusion – Claim or statement that is in dispute and that we are trying to support with reasons.

 

Premises – Claims that offer evidence or reasons intended to support the conclusion.

 

Premise Indicators - Since, on the grounds that, because, for the reason that, for, as indicated by, follows from, may be inferred from, as shown by, may be derived from, given that, may be deduced from.

 

Conclusion Indicators – Therefore, thus, so, hence, then, it follows that, it can be inferred that, in conclusion, accordingly, for this reason, on these grounds it is clear that, consequently, proves that, shows that, indicates that, we can conclude that, we can infer that, demonstrates that.

If the diet works, then the dieter’s metabolism is altered. Any altered metabolism as a result of dieting means a person will need less food. Needing less food, the person will gain weight more easily. Therefore, after successful dieting, a person will gain weight more easily.

 

 

12.       If you want to be successful in business on a long-term basis, you must match your operational expertise with an ethical code of conduct practiced in every phase of your business. No exceptions! Why? Because history has proven that ethical businesses succeed in the long run and, to put it bluntly, because business ethics can be measured in dollars. Sooner or later, unethical businesses get caught.
