Meetings

Our weekly meetings are held every Monday at 8:00 p.m. in room B15 of McDonel Hall. Check out the events calendar for information on meetings and other Spectrum events.

If you have ideas or suggestions for what you would like to have a meeting about, contact an E-Board member and we will do our best to include your ideas in our future meetings.

Spring Semester

Movie and Discussion - January 14
An in-depth discussion of an LBGT-themed movie.
No meeting; look for MLK Jr. Day events - January 21
Sex in the Dark: A presentation by Olin Health Center- January 28
Got a burning question about sex or relationships? Come to Olin's presentation to learn more and ask all the questions you want in a discreet and anonymous manner.
LGBT Community and Body Image - February 4
Why is body image so important? And what about the LGBT community, which is supposed to be accepting of all people without discrimination? Come discuss the factors that affect our perception of body image and other issues in a positive and accepting atmosphere.
Speed Meet-and-Greet - Febuary 11
Find that special someone for Valentine's day at Spectrums speed meet-and-greet. Meet new people and find what you're looking for in this fun, low-pressure meeting.
The Ass and the Elephant - February 18
We will be discussing this year's pending Presedential election. Get the facts on the candidates and info on the issues. Come talk about who your favorite candidate is, and who's your least favorite.
Big Gay Conference Discussion - February 25
Those who attend the Big Gay Conference will give the rest of us a run down of what they learned, who they saw, how it was, and everything else you missed.
Religion and Sexuality - March 10
Can the two ever be reconciled? Come join us as we inviteLBGT-friendly guests to discuss their religion and its views on the LBGT community.
St. Patrick's Day Party - March 17
For those of us who prefer an evening of enlightened sobriety, Spectrum will be open and available. Get away from the drunken mess of St. Patty's parties and chill in a relaxed atmosphere.
E-Board Position Presentation - March 24
Ever wonder how all these meetings get planned? Come find out what it's all about at the E-Board position presentation. If you're interested in becoming an E-Board member this is an essential meeting to attend. There will be lots of open positions for next year!
E-Board Elections - March 31
Vote for next year's President and other E-Board members. This is your chance to have a say in what Spectrum will be in the future. Don't waste your voice, come vote!

Fall Semester

First Meeting - August 27

Our first meeting will take place in the Spectrum Room. This is a great way to meet new people in a friendly and non-threatening atmosphere. Come learn what Spectrum has to offer, and give your input on what you would like to get out of Spectrum. Snacks will be provided!

Our first E-Board meeting will begin directly after this event.

Movie & Game Night - September 3
Since this will take place during Labor Day weekend, this meeting will be very informal. If you're at MSU, come by for some friendly board games and a movie. Feel free to bring games or snacks to share!
PostSecret & Decoration Night - September 10

Help us decorate the Spectrum room in a creative way by contributing to our Post Secret collage. We wil also be using other art supplies to decorate the room and make it our own for the year. Help us out by bringing any art supplies that you have, including old magazines, markers, construction paper, and whatever else you think of (except paint).

For artistic inspiration, check out the Post Secret Blog, which updates weekly!

LGBT and the Media - September 17

On this night we'll show our more serious side as we discuss the many issues that affect the LGBTA community. You'll have a chance to voice your opinion and find out what you can do to support our causes. We'll also discuss the portrayal of queers in the media.

Start thinking about LGBT-related books, movies, music, magazines, websites, and TV shows that you like and would like to share with others.

Coming Out Stories -September 24
In preparation for National Coming Out Week and National Coming Out Day, we will be discussing "coming out of the closet". We'll share stories (both positive and negative), experiences, and advice.
Mask Making - October 1
The NCOD Dance is on October 6, and this year's theme is the "Unmasked Ball". In preparation for this event, we will be making masks for the dance. Who knows, you might even find someone who wants to take you to the dance!
Fishbowl Q&A - October 15
We all have a lot of questions about being part of the LGBTA community, so this meeting will provide an opportunity for you to ask anything you want - anonymously.
Movie Night - October 22
We're postponing the Olin Health Center presentation and having a movie night instead. Only E-Board members should bring movies (unless there's something you really want to see; in that case, ask Kalie).
Halloween Party - October 29
Wear your costume to the Spectrum halloween party!
Leadership & Team Building - Novmber 5
This meeting was rescheduled to a bit later in the year so we know each other better before we try some leadership and teambuilding activities. Meet new people or have fun with established friends!
Transgeneration: Video and Discussion - November 12
From Sundance movie to LOGO television show, Transgeneration has brought transexuality to the public eye with this groundbreaking show which documents transgenrder individuals as they go through the process of becoming who they really are.
