Julie Sims joined the Skunkworks Lab in 2007. Her research interests are focused primarily on environmental problems, including watershed management and ecosystem restoration with an emphasis on engaging local communities in the decision making process. She currently works for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and serves as a technical expert, community liaison, and program coordinator for several of Michigan‘s Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs).

Her role as an AOC liaison is to work closely with local public advisory groups to seek funding and implement projects for water quality protection, monitoring, and restoration. As a liaison, she helps implement the MDEQ’s statewide criteria for determining restoration of water quality within AOCs. In addition, she represents the State of Michigan on a bi-national workgroup to manage Lake Superior and on a multi-jurisdictional workgroup to manage Lake Michigan. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, listening to music, exercising, and watching The Food Network.
