INTRODUCTION
| I am a professor of History and African Studies at Michigan State University. I specialize in research and teaching on 19th and 20th century West Africa, particularly areas that are Muslim in religious practice and were colonies of France until independence in 1960. |  |
In this context I have just completed a book entitled Paths of Accommodation: Muslim Societies and French Colonial Authorities in Senegal and Mauritania, 1880 to 1920, which was published by Ohio University Press and James Currey in 2000.
l am also working a great deal now on a digital libraries project, African Digital Libraries for West African Sources, in conjunction with colleagues at Michigan State, the West African Research Center (WARC) and the Institut Fondemental d'Afrique Noire (IFAN) in Dakar.
