Jerry Jovanny Coronel Castillo is the Treasurer of the Asociación de Pequeños Productores Bananeros "El Guabo," a 350-member association of small-scale banana producers in southern Ecuador. El Guabo was established in 1997 so that its members and the community could benefit from Fair Trade. Jovanny is one of the 14 founding members of the association and for the past two years has served the association proudly as a member of the board.

Jovanny is also the president of "Asociacion Agroartesanal Pasaje" or the Association of Artisan Farmers of Pasaje, which is an affiliate of El Guabo. This is a farmer-run organization made possible from the revenue of Fair Trade sales and it coordinates the entirety of the social and environmental programs of El Guabo. The Association of Artisan Farmers is also responsible for the production and commercialization of organic fertilizers that are used by most of the members of El Guabo.

In 1997, 14 banana farmers from southwestern Ecuador formed El Guabo in order to participate in and benefit from Fair Trade. El Guabo is an association of small-scale banana producers in the provinces of Azuay, El Oro, and Guayas. Today, El Guabo has 350 members and employs over 2,000 people. Having established its own export department and a process to monitor production from farm to port, El Guabo

has eliminated its dependency on local intermediaries.
