My ideas about interactive web-based learning tools (for Integrative Studies workshop: August 18, 1999).
Purpose
To encourage student engagement with course material
To foster co-operative learning through chatrooms and "web talk" groups
To require manipulation of knowledge to solve problems
To encourage analysis and synthesis
To provide challenge to students with a range of abilities
Requirements
Ease of use
Clear instructions
Scalable to different user configurations
Advantages
Promotes critical thinking and self assessment
Srudents receive immediate feedback
Automated grading of problem sets allows more time for instructor evaluation of other types of assignment (e.g., writing)
Extends learning beyond physical classroom space
Disadvantages
Discourages reactive changes to course content
Assumes students will have access to a computer with an internet connection
Offline study requires printing of a hardcopy
Observations
Encourages student discussion of problem solving methods
Numerical problems tend to have lowest completion rates
Correlation exists between student performance in homework and in exams
Possibilities
Enhance interactive experience (Java applets, Shockwave, Quicktime animations)
Integration of CD-ROM-type materials with robust testing materials.
