Volunteer Opportunities

We will be posting various volunteer opportunities available around the area.  If you have any questions please send us an email.



In case you missed it during the meeting last Monday, here is some information regarding the volunteer opportunities discussed at our meeting on Oct. 1st.

I.       Haven House

A.    Provides safe, temporary housing to families with nowhere else to turn.  They provide a bedroom, food, laundry facilities, tutoring/mentor programs, and personal needs items.   

B.     Volunteers can work with children, answer phones, and help with chores.

II.                American Red Cross – Mid-Michigan Chapter

A.    1st stop for immediate help in disaster situations and provide 90% of donated blood.   

B.     Volunteer Opportunities include Armed Forces Emergency Services, Regional Food Distribution Center, Staff Aide, and helping with blood drives and emergency food and shelter programs.  National Disaster Program and Health and Safety Instructors require higher training. 

C.     Contact 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to donate blood and 517-484-7461 for other Ingham County volunteer opportunities.  Must fill out application and have transportation available.  Background checks will be completed. 

III.             Holt Junior High

A.      One-on-one mentoring/tutoring program to 7th and 8th grades (ages 11-14). 

B.     Program requires that you volunteer one day a week for at least one semester.  Mentoring starts Monday, October 1st at 2:35 – 3:30pm or on Wednesday mornings from 8-10am.

IV.             MSU Sexual Assault Program

A.    Provides 24 hour immediate crisis intervention and advocacy services to women and men who have been impacted by rape or sexual assault.  Also, they provide sexual assault prevention education.

B.     Volunteers can train for medical advocacy, judicial advocacy, and prevention and risk reduction programs.

C.     Contact Sherri at 517-372-6666.  Training is 32 hours spread over three weeks.  They ask for a commitment of two days per month for at least two semesters.  Actively recruiting men and women.

V.                Ronald McDonald House

A.    Provide shelter for families with children receiving medical treatment.  The Mid-Michigan Chapter serves 250 families annually.   

B.     Volunteers can clean the house, cook dinners, greet/register families, help with fundraising events, and office work. 

C.     Contact 517-485-9303.  They ask for 2-3 hour shifts per month for at least one year.     

VI.             The Listening Ear Crisis Center

A.    Free, confidential hotline for people experiences crisis, which can be defined as any situation in which a person’s normal coping mechanisms are unable to handle the situation. 

B.     They also provide sexual assault counseling and work in the community to educate and prevent assault. 

C.     Contact 517-337-1728.  They ask for one shift (4 hours) per week.  Training is 65 hours over two weekends.  The next training sessions are in January.
