Introduction
The biotech interest group (BIG) of Michigan State University is housed in the Agricultural Economics Department. This group started in 1998 with two faculty members discussing the important changes and trends in the agrifood system. Subsequently, additional faculty and students have made this a large and dynamic biotech research group. The objective of the research is to assess the impact agbiotech has and will have on the world. Specifically, the type of research projects undertaken seek to:
• understand and model the relationships among market structure and innovative activity.
• assess the impact on international trade shares.
• derive policy implications for measuring and regulating concentration in biotech innovation markets.
• valuing technology.
• valuing start-up firms
• assess the impact on developing countries.
• determine the differences between small and large firms.
