Several students have completed or are now enrolled in both the Linguistics
and TESOL programs simultaneously. This is an excellent option for students
wishing to go on for a Ph.D. in applied linguistics or for students who
wish to go for a Ph.D. in theoretical linguistics, but who wish to teach
ESL as well.
Students wanting two MAs, one in Linguistics and one in TESOL, must fulfill the requirements of both degrees. Several courses can be counted toward both degrees, but students must meet the university requirement of 54 credits for the two MAs. Generally, this is a three-year program.
The requirements for the MA in linguistics can be found at:
http://linglang.msu.edu/linguistics/
Students interested in this option should apply to one of the two programs
initially, and then upon arrival at MSU, apply to the second program.
It is good to speak ahead of time with representatives of both programs,
Charlene Polio for TESOL and Alan Munn for linguistics.
