I'd like to apologize for not responding to emails for some time. 2 reasons: work has gotten very very busy, and an unimaginable amount of SPAM. Separating real e-mails from spam is no easy task. Some spelling and some links have been fixed. I`d like to thank everyone who has helped me tremendously by pointing out errors. With new Kanji, there are probably many new mistakes also. Please keep telling me when you`ve found them.

If your browser doesn`t support the new version, you can still use the ancient version.

Displaying Japanese Characters

There was a time when displaying Japanese Characters on your browser was very complicated. Today, its not as much of an issue. In case you are having trouble, the following information may still be of some use to you. Below I have links to two sites where you can download software that will work with most systems. Free trial versions are available. Simply download one and run the program. When this is done, you should see a small strip appear somewhere on the screen. Make sure it is set for S-JIS, the characterset used for this page. KanjiKit should start in S-JIS, but with NJwin, you will have to change it. As soon as this is done, you should be able to view the characters correctly. You may also need to use the encoding option on your browser under the view menu, under fonts for IE, or encoding for Netscape.

IMPORTANT: for Netscape Navigator 4.5 you must go to Character Set under the View menu, and set it to Japanese (auto detect or S-JIS). Once this is done, go to View/character set again, and choose Set Default Character Set. You will need to do this to display the characters on this page, even though it is not required on some other pages. Do this BEFORE starting the game.

Foreword

This program is designed for the study of Japanese, both characters, and vocabulary. The words and compounds have been taken them from various sources. No download necessary!

Before starting a new game choose the options. You can choose to be quizzed on Kanji and answer in English, quizzed in Kana and answer in Kanji, shown English and answer in Kanji... All six ways are possible. After selecting new game, you will be prompted for which level you want to study. Right now in Kanji, you can study from level 1 to 60, and there are twentyfive levels for combinations. Also, for Kanji, you can study all the Kanji learned in 1st through 6th grades, or you can study all of the Kanji in the database by typing in 'all' for level. Also, you can enter level 100 for the first 100 kanji, 200 for the second 100 and so on. They are in the order set up by the ministry of education. The custom process is being updated and will be down for the time being.

Try out combinations from either English or Kana to Kanji. It took me forever to code.
