      • Dickson described the purpose of the Technology Exploration Center (see the amended minutes of the ICTC meeting 8 September 1995)
      • At TEC, technology is used to build social networks facilitating social connectivity. There are a variety of social network clusters at TEC.
      • To keep pace with changing technology, Dickson suggested that software companies would pay a fee to place and maintain their software on a hard disk space and that companies would pay a fee to be on the advisory committee for TEC.
      • Dickson described the concept of a public teaching area where incidental learning is encouraged. He also discussed the concept of teaching in the round where the computer lab is configured with the computers along the perimeter of a room and a collective meeting place in the center. He presented a teaching lab currently in this configuration where education students conduct interactive problem solving for an elementary school room setting.
      • Dickson presented a distance learning lab with the TEC facility.
      • In the lobby of the structure, Dickson described future plans to incorporate WKAR broadcasts.

    3. Discussion--Minutes 8 September 1995. Several revisions to the minutes were requested and the committee will examine the amended minutes at the next ICTC meeting.

    4. Discussion--Presentation by Dr. Hunt. Urban-Lurain stated that he is attempting to contact Dr. Hunt to arrange for an ICTC meeting with Dr. Hunt.

    5. Discussion--Classroom Facility Improvement. Albert stated that the President contacted Ron Flynn (assistant vice president in charge of Physical Plant) at home the Sunday before Labor day concerning classroom conditions. The President also contact Sam Chatterjee Director of IMC at home. There was a meeting held on Friday September 1 at 5:00 (to show how important this was it was the Friday of Labor day weekend). Those in attendance were the President, Ron Flynn, Sam Chatterjee, Paul Hunt, Provost Simon, Bill Latta (Facilities Planning & Space Management), Roger Wilkinson and Nancy Pogel. This appears to be a very important issue for President and MSU. The President was looking for help in improving the classrooms and the service. The classrooms in question would be classrooms of all sizes. There has been a committee formed to deal with this issue who reports to the President.

There is discussion about equipping classrooms permanently with Overhead, VCR and Monitor and Slide projector. Faculty are saying they need immediate access to the above equipment. IMC will be looking toward the committee for assistance and support for its recommendations. We (IMC) will need more of the above equipment and people to meet this need.

    6. Discussion--Broadcasting Services. Creswell expressed appreciation to the committee for supporting broadcasting services' request for funds to upgrade the Communication Arts 145 multimedia classroom. He anticipates C & T approval and availability of these funds in the near future.

    7. Discussion--Switcher Installation. Creswell indicated that the broadcasting services' switcher installation is proceeding and he will investigate the possibility of having ICTC tour the new installation at a future date.

    8. Discussion--ICTC Guest. Heeter suggested that Byron Brown should be contacted to give an overview about large group presentation methods with technology.

    9. Announcement--Landon Hall Computer Facility. Stead stated that a new 38 seat microcomputer facility in Landon Hall will be open in late September.

    10. Announcement.--PowerMac 7100s will be installed in Communication Arts, upgrading a dated SE facility. The SE computers will become spare parts and reserve computers for existing SE facilities.

    11. Announcement.--Grand Rapids Lab. There is now a remote computer lab facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

    12. Discussion--Computer Theft. There have been computer thefts in Bessey and Kedzie Halls. In addition, some computer labs have experienced theft of interior hardware on Macs.

    13. Discussion--Vagrancy in Computer Labs. Vagrants have been found sleeping in computer labs. Urban-Lurain strongly urges that if anyone encounters a vagrant, to call DPS and let them handle the situation.

    14. Discussion--Dial-up Access. Allen reported MichNet Port Access problems for a graduate student, indicating extremely low access success. Allen suggested that ICTC should examine available statistics on dial-up connections.
