MSU did very well, winning 6 medals in 3 events. The complete breakdown is:
Chris Walsh won the Mixed Epee tournament and earned a D08. Nick Piontek placed second in the Mixed Sabre event and renewed his E08. Will Bonner placed second in the Mixed Foil event and renewed his E08. Eric Carlson took home third place medals in both Mixed Foil and Mixed Sabre, earning an E08 in both weapons. Varsity Vanquished!
Posted 01-19-08
It's a little late, but we wanted to bring you the results of the recent tournament hosted by the University of Detroit
Mercy. Michigan State fenced against Detroit Mercy, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan. The men's team
went 2-1 on the day by defeating UDM 15-12 and Wayne State 17-10. Unfortunately, the men were defeated by a tough U of M
squad.
The women went 1-2 on the day. The women defeated UDM 18-9, lost to Wayne State 10-17, and fell just short against U of M, losing a 12-15 decision. It was a strong effort overall, but we also know we have more work to do. Look for complete results in the competition results page soon. The Man Behind the Mask
Posted 01-17-08
Chris Oberg is a man we all know as the coach of the MSU Fencing Club. Without him it's doubtful we'd still be here.
Recently The State News (the local newspaper) did an interview with Chris that sheds some light on the man behind the mask.
A multimedia version of the interview can be found
here. On a side comment I'd
like to say it's very well done. For more information on Chris you can visit his personal website:

Fantasically Frigid Fencing: Polar Bear C and Under
Posted 01-14-2008
Spartan Fencers competed in the Polar Bear C and Under at UFO this Saturday, and fenced extremely well. Competing in
four events; Mixed and Women's Epee and Mixed and Women's Sabre, MSU won 7 medals!
In Women's Sabre, Meg Holt took the silver polar bear, and Lauren Hoehn took home a bronze. In Mixed Sabre, Nick Piontek collected another silver bear, and John Leefers was awarded a bronze. In Women's Epee, Erin MacCourtney won the gold polar bear and earned her E08, and Lauren Hoehn won a second bronze. In Mixed Epee, Josh Castle earned an E08 for his 5th place performance, just missing a cute, cuddly medal! And in the surprise of the day, MSU saberist John Leefers entered the Epee competition and emerged victorious, winning the gold and a C08 in Epee. Congratulations John, and everyone. Well done!
Wrapping up '07

Hello one and all! This is our last post for 2007 so here's to another great year for fencing! You may have
noticed that the site was down for quite a while. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,
MSU's servers went down due to a hardware issue and they took a while to get back online.
Just because the server was down don't think we took the time off though! We've made updates to the site as a whole. Most noticeable the awards page is finally complete and will be updated after every collegiate event. So browse the site, enjoy yourself, and we'll see you in 2008!

Anybody who is available and wants to help should e-mail Becky (her address is on the

middle of the day during the week, let her know.
By the way, we're working on a new members e-mail list. If you didn't get an e-mail from Becky and are a member of the club, send a message to fencing@msu.edu.
It's Almost Time

October 13th - MSU Hosts USFA Open That's all for now. Have a great rest of the summer, and see you all back here when school starts! Also, if you get a chance, check out the new Photo Gallery! We're going to be adding to it as the year goes on, so if you have a fun picture or a good fencing pose, e-mail Josh. From the Desk of Chris Oberg
Posted 7-12-2007
NOTE: Chris Oberg is the coach of the MSU fencing club, and a very
accomplished and knowledgeable fencer. We asked Chris to send us anything he thought interesting in the world of fencing. And now,
the inaugural post from the desk of Chris Oberg.
I would like to dedicate the first installment to the Schmitter collection, the largest collection of rare fencing related books in the country. These books are available to look at in the Special collections area in the basement of the MSU library. Due to the rare and delicate condition of the books, the Schmitter collection is NOT available for check out and must be viewed only in the special collections reading room. In an effort to make these books more available to MSU fencing students, I have requested that some of the Schmitter collection be digitized and made available in pdf format. The first three books to be digitally copied are: Barbasetti - "The Art of Sabre and the Epee" Rondelle - "Foil and Sabre: a Grammar of Fencing for the Master and the Student" Beke - "The Methodology of Sabre Fencing" In the future, if any MSU fencer would like to have a favorite fencing book converted to pdf format, I am taking requests. -Chris Oberg
