Projects

Forthcoming Projects
- Computers in Writing Intensive Classes/New Media Project
- I will be attending CIWIC/NM this summer (July 2004) to work on new media interfaces to data visualization and user-manipulable information schema.
- Rhetoric and Writing Program at MSU: GradSIG web portal
- I'm currently developing a web portal for MSU graduate students who are interested in teaching and researching language, literacy, composition. The site will house resources, contact information, sample syllabi, calls for papers, and job listings.
- Dissertation: Online Scholarship and Electronic Publication
- I have some work already started on this, but it's at the invention stage right now...eventually I will post my proposal and bibliographies here.
Current and Continuing Projects

Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy
- I joined the editorial staff of Kairos in 1997 as CoverWeb Editor (issue 2.1) and became overall Co-Editor with James Inman in 2000 for issue 5.1 (after serving as sole Editor for issue 4.1). As Editor, I review submissions, communicate with authors, editorial staff, and editorial board members, manage the process of evaluating and revising submissions, and build the structural framework and underlying code for each issue. I also work to develop new sections or approaches to publishing work online and am continually investigating and implementing ways to make Kairos more accessible to any audience, but also to researchers and teachers in particular.
- Conference on College Composition and Communication: Computer Connection
- Beginning in 2002, I took over the coordination of the Computer Connection at CCCC -- Sponsored by the CCCC Committee on Computers and Composition, the CCCC Computer Connection offers presentations on new software and technologies for teaching composition and literature, computer-facilitated classroom practices, best practices for teaching online, new technology resources, and electronic journals. I was privileged to follow in the footsteps of Pete Sands and Claudine Keenan, who had done an excellent job of organizing the presentations and raising the visibility of the project at the conference. As coordinator, I solicit and evaluate submissions, prepare the schedule, work with NCTE staff to ensure that the presentations appear in the schedule and that the technology appropriate for the presentations is available; I also prepare an annual report about the project for the Committee on Computers and Composition.
Writing in Digital Environments: The WIDE Center at Michigan State University
- I currently maintain and update the website for the WIDE Center; I also developed the current design of the site in collaboration with Josh Clappe, Jeff Grabill, Chad O'Neil, Tina Urbain, and Katie Van Loo. (The WIDE Center logo was designed by Chris Bray and Chris Martin.)
Writing in Digital Environments: A Use-In-Context Documentation Model and Application
- I have applied for funding and support for the development of both a model and a prototype application that will serve to document users, systems, and organizations--the prototype development will use the WIDE Center itself as the location of the users and systems within the organization that is to be documented.
Department of Rhetoric and Writing: ePortfolios for Graduate Education
- I am currently drafting a proposal to implement and modify an open-source electronic portfolio application for use by graduate students in the Rhetoric and Writing program with an eye toward eventually using the system for undergradates in the Professional Writing program.
Bedford/St. Martin's Teaching with Technology Workshops and Website
- In 2002, I was asked by Bedford/St. Martin's Press to help develop online materials that addressed key technical and organizational issues that relate to teaching with technology. These materials are designed to support workshops presented to faculty at institutions across the country; I presented one such workshop at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2004. The website materials were developed with Cindy Wambeam and Nick Carbone.
