Below are links to pages with various photos I’ve taken while researching or traveling in West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and North America.

Below: Inside a bus in western Mali.  I took this photo during a stop, when most of the passengers had gotten out.  All the seats were full, as well as a row of stools in the aisle.  Though cozy, this bus was actually fairly roomy compared with others in the region.
Below: Traffic in Dhaka, Bangladesh.  I took this photo as a passenger in a CNG, the type of small taxi seen in the right side of the photo.  ‘CNG’ stands for compressed natural gas--a fuel innovation that has helped decrease air pollution in Bangladesh.

Below: Ceiba pentandra is known for the prominent spines on its trunk, as well as its pantropical distribution.  There is strong evidence that it is native to both sides of the Atlantic, although it is often associated with settlements in semi-arid West Africa.

Below: Riding in freeway traffic in Los Angeles, California.  Sharing the road with thousands of others is a daily experience for most North Americans, although we are usually isolated from one other in the protective capsules our cars provide.
