Compline

The Michigan State University Compline is the Michigan State University Competition Line. In the early 1980’s, the Michigan State Drumline went to the Spartan Marching Percussion Festival in Glenbrook, Illinois. Since then, many Spartan Complines have gone on to compete with other collegiate drumlines in competitions ranging from Bands of America to the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. The Spartan Marching Band Drumline combines with members of the Michigan State University Percussion Studio to form the Compline. The Compline is an extension of the Spartan Marching Band and the School of Music.

The 2004 Ghost Train show was significantly different from the 1997 version. The show was in three movements, just as the original work from Eric Whitacre. All of the movements contained programmatic elements to the music.

This compline went to PASIC in Nashville and placed second. Levon, Neel, and Vince won best tenor section at the competition.

The 2002 show was based on a collection of Michael Daugherty music. The opener, Lex, is based on Lex Luthor of the Marvel Superman comics. The second movement was based on the third movement (Flying) of the percussion concerto UFO, and the last piece of the show was an arrangement of the last movement of the concerto entitled Objects. This show premiered the use of our electronic drum rack designed by Todd Ohme.

The compline placed third at PASIC, and Levon, Neel, and Jim won best tenor section at the competition.

Ghost Train is a symphonic band piece by Eric Whitacre, and it lends itself well to compline due to its rhythmic activity and progammatic elements. The 1997 show was actually performed in 1998 for a clinic in Indiana and a performance/clinic at the Glenbrook North competition in Chicago. The drumline played a lot of notes in this show.

The compline placed 1st in the collegiate division at the Glenbrook competition.

The 1996 show, On the Waterfront, was the first for Jon Weber and Jim Devine. The show was based on Leonard Bernstein's only movie score for the movie On the Waterfront. The drumline used a series of moving pods (2 snares, tenor) and antiphonal timpani for the fugue (presto barbaro). The middle movement, Forward with Warmth, featured the pit, and the last movement returned to the aggressive Michigan State Drumline style.

The compline placed 2nd of 18 universities at PASIC, held in Nashville, Tennessee in 1996.
